2022 September Concert Change

Due to the withdrawal of one of its members from public performance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the concert by the Aroha String Quartet scheduled for Tuesday 20th September has been replaced. CMNZ is pleased to present – but note the change of date:

New Zealand String Quartet
Wednesday 28th September – 7.30 pm

– Sarah Ballard Brahma-samhitā for soprano and string quartet (world premiere performance)
– Britten String Quartet no 2 in C major, op 36
– Beethoven String Quartet in F major, op 59/1 Rasumovsky

The New Zealand String Quartet has been a leading chamber ensemble since it formed in 1987, with a distinguished record of international successes and acclaimed recordings. It has been the quartet-in-residence at the N Z School of Music since 1991. With Sarah Ballard (soprano) the Quartet will present the world premiere of Sarah’s new composition – Brahma-samhitā.

While training as a young pianist in Auckland, graduating from the University of Auckland and the Sydney Conservatorium, Lorelle developed a specialisation in Spanish piano repertoire. She moved to Barcelona to study with colleagues and disciples of Alicia de Larrocha. Lorelle now has a growing reputation as an interpreter of Spanish music. For CMHV, she performs impressionistic music created by French and Spanish composers.

New Zealand Chamber Soloists has been performing throughout New Zealand and internationally since it was formed in 2006. It embodies a unique blend of virtuosity, colour and spontaneous energy to its music-making, with a reputation for presenting the unique voice of young New Zealand composers, alongside classical and contemporary traditions. For CMHV they present the gorgeous colours and flavours of Czech music – romantic to modern eras.

Yuka Eguchi and Kemp English

Yuka Eguchi and Kemp English are a violin and piano duo. Yuka has been Assistant Concertmaster of the N Z Symphony Orchestra since 2015, having previously led the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and then the Tokyo Mozart Players. Kemp has built an international reputation as an organist, a collaborative pianist and a specialist fortepiano exponent. Kemp will accompany Yuka on a fortepiano for this concert of music from baroque and classical periods.

Strings Amore

Strings Amore brings together five accomplished string players, resident in Wellington, to present music showcasing the viola d’amore. This instrument has six or seven strings plus others not played but vibrating in sympathy and giving it a sweet, warm sound. Much loved by baroque masters Vivaldi, Telemann and Graupner, the concert will feature music by them, plus Bach’s Concerto for violin in E major and Telemann’s Concerto for viola in G major.

Aroha String Quartet. Founded in 2004, the Quartet is known for “accomplished brilliance, soulfulness and sublime intensity, all in perfect balance and tonal unity”. It is committed to presenting works ranging from the western classical and avant-garde repertoires to Chinese folk music. For many years the members have contributed their knowledge and energy to a very successful Music Residency programme in Hutt Valley schools.
