2019 Concert Series

We are pleased to announce the Chamber Music Hutt Valley 2019 concert series. Memberships and season tickets are available here, and tickets to individual concerts will be available progressively on Eventfinda from January 2019 (refer EventFinda links below).

Amici Ensemble
Monday 27th May – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Amici Ensemble was formed by Donald Armstrong, the Associate Concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, in 1988 to perform works for many varieties of  combination of instruments. Once again, in 2019, he draws together principal musicians from the NZSO to present an innovative programme.  The Amici Ensemble is noted for its musicality and ability to relate to audiences – “splendid playing of a winning programme ..” – Dominion Post.

Donizetti Trio
Wednesday 19th June – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Donizetti Trio have a wonderfully fresh approach to music – showcasing the little-known but attractive repertoire for their combination of instruments; Italian baroque to bel canto era opera transcriptions and fantasies to contemporary works.  Based in Auckland, this harmonious combination of instruments  has been performing together since 2009. “The epitome of smooth…admirably fleet-fingered…techniques comes across as naturally as birdsong” – NZ Herald.

Adam Troubadours
Wednesday 17th July – 7:30pm
St. Marks Church, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt

Adam Troubadours is a new string quartet of talented young players, selected from amongst students at the Adam Summer School for Chamber Music, been mentored by the N Z String Quartet and are now touring for Chamber Music New Zealand.  All have been members of the National Youth Orchestra.  The previous edition of Adam Troubadours, in 2017, presented a concert in the Little Theatre hailed as “..revelatory, fascinating and compelling” – Middle-C.

Morton Trio
Wednesday 7th August – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Morton Trio is comprised of three emerging professional musicians from New Zealand, now studying in Melbourne.  A bond of long friendship imbues performances with sensitivity as they explore the rich sonorities available when the cello in a piano trio is replaced by a French horn.  Arna led the 2017 Adam Troubadours superbly;  Alex believes everybody loves classical music, they just might not know it yet;  and Liam is committed to an advocacy of New Zealand music.

Diedre Irons
Thursday 31st October – 7.30 pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Diedre Irons   is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished pianists.  Born in Canada, she trained, and taught, there and in the USA before coming to N Z in 1977, where she has also taught and performed extensively.  Together with an MBE and CMNZ, Diedre has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Brandon University – “in recognition of outstanding contributions in the world of music through superlative achievement as a talented, dedicated and passionate pianist”.

2018 Concert Series

Mazzoli Trio
Monday 26th March – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Mazzoli Trio was formed at the University of Auckland in 2015.  It has gained international attention since being invited to perform at the 2nd International Pacific Alliance of Music Schools Summit, held in Beijing.  Members of the group are each winners of chamber music concerts in New Zealand and have given solo and chamber music concerts through Europe, Britain, China, SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand.  The Mazzoli Trio are Shauno Isomura (violin), Julie Park (viola) and Sally Kim (cello).

Michael Houstoun
Thursday 12th April – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Michael Houstoun had by age 18 won every major music competition in New Zealand.  In 1973 he placed 3rd in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  Other successes came at the Leeds Piano Competition (4th, 1975) and at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (6th, 1982).  Michael  then followed his heart back to New Zealand.  In recognition of his contribution to music here he was awarded CNZM in 2012.

Toru Trio
Wednesday 16th May – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Toru Trio consists of three principal players from Orchestra Wellington.  The sound combination of flute, viola and harp was popularised by Debussy. It has been often enjoyed since.  Karen Batten (flute) plays with groups Ethos, Elios and Nikau; Sophia Acheson (viola) has furthered studies in Spain and the USA, developing an interest in early music;  Ingrid Bauer (harp) has given solo recitals in six countries but loves making music in small ensembles.

Klara Collectiv
Thursday 26th July – 7:30pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Klara Kollectiv  from Sweden, is a free-form ensemble in extension of the Dalecarlia Quintet which toured for CMNZ in 2014, including a concert for Chamber Music Hutt Valley.  Anna (Associate Principal Clarinet with Wermland Opera) and Manu (Associate Principal Second Violin with DalaSinfoniettan) are New Zealanders, joined on this occasion by pianist Taru Kurki, who is Head of Piano at the Musikkonservatoriet Falun.

LTJJI Quintet
Monday 15th October – 7.30 pm
Little Theatre, Lower Hutt

Much-loved pianist Diedre Irons is joined by Vesa-Matti Leppänen (Concertmaster), Andrew Thomson (Principal Second Violin), Julia Joyce (Principal Viola) and Andrew Joyce (Principal Cello) from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.  Of their concert in May 2015, Peter Mechen wrote  “… levels of skill, intensity, beauty and enjoyment .. to .. grace a recital platform anywhere in the world.”
